I. Analyze and describe the Princess of Disks Thoth Tarot

1. Image

In Princess of Disks Thoth Tarot the card, we encounter awakening femininity longing for unity and desire of creative power to have something formed and exist in the world: the principle of pregnancy (we can see the belly on the card). The tip of her spear — penetrating deep into the Earth — transformed into a diamond that symbolizes “the birth of the highest and purest light in the deepest and darkest of the Elements” (Crowley). The spear, about to penetrate into the Earth, shows the action of a physical combination when deeply inserted into the center, in which the mundane darkness where eternal life germinates.

The altar in the background is the place of worship and sacrifice of Mother Earth; Princess of meditation is a priestess of the earth and Agricultural Goddess, Demeter. Her horned helmet and sheepskin cloak, however, also show her connection to Artemis, the ruler of the animals. The flower in her right hand is the rose of the Great Goddess Isis. In its center, there are symbols of positive and negative polarizing elements in Taoism, they fluctuate in complete harmony. The combination of archetypal polarizations, such as a Spiritual Marriage, is the climax of ancient mysteries and magical reproductive rituals.

2. Myth

With the horns of male and animal skins, the Princess is the embodiment of Kallisto (meaning “lovely”), the goddess of hunting, among the followers of Goddess Artemis, guardian of chastity and virginity. By sleeping with Zeus, who had tricked her to make love, she violated the oath of being the goddess’s virginity. When the result of this became apparent, she was killed by Artemis, but before she gave birth to the twin brothers of Zeus: Arcas, the ancestor of Arcadia, and Pan, whom we will see in the next card. In return, Zeus placed her in the starry sky, and she became the Ursa Major constellation.
